"What do you want, Brick?" Spec-ial is a series of deep dives into materials and details, from classic materials like wood to experimental materials like hemp. The goal of our research is to develop an understanding as a foundation to rationally select and use materials in each of our projects.
In EP04, in collaboration with Champaca, we dive into solid wood, a readily available and versatile material that has been used for centuries in construction, furniture, and various other applications. We explore the different types of solid wood, such as oak, maple, and cherry, each with its own unique properties and characteristics. We discuss where these woods can be sourced, from local lumber yards to sustainable forests, and the environmental impact of each option. Additionally, we examine the advantages of using solid wood, such as its strength, durability, and aesthetic appeal, as well as its disadvantages, including susceptibility to moisture and potential for warping.
